Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often misunderstood as simply being overly clean or organized, but in reality, it is a serious mental health condition that can significantly affect daily life. In New Mexico, many individuals live with OCD symptoms without realizing that effective treatment is available.
OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. These may include excessive handwashing, checking locks repeatedly, counting, arranging items, or constant fear of contamination or harm.
These behaviors are not habits or preferences—they are driven by intense anxiety and can interfere with work, school, and relationships. Many people feel embarrassed or ashamed, causing them to delay seeking professional help.
Treatment for OCD often includes therapy such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), medication management, and ongoing psychiatric support. With proper care, symptoms can be managed, and quality of life can improve greatly.
OCD is not a personality trait—it is a treatable mental health condition, and no one should have to face it alone.
